Course Overview

This course is the self-study prerequisite to the in-person clinical component. Following successful completion of the theory course, a registration link for the clinical course will be shared.

Exam

The Theory Exam is offered monthly at the University of Alberta, and the date is chosen at the registration. The exam runs during the first week of the month and can be booked during allotted dates and times at the Learning Assessment Center and the U of A. 

Participants may also choose to write the theory exam at a recognized testing center on a date and time at their convenience (testing center fees will apply and are payable by the participant to the testing center). Participants choosing to write at a testing center must email dentce@ualberta.ca the following information at least 2 weeks prior to their exam:

  • Name of the testing center
  • Name and email of the proctor
  • Date and time of the exam

Participants have 1 year from the completion of their theory exam to complete the clinical module - required for certification.

Course Materials

Upon registration, participants will receive information via email regarding how to access the E-Class Module and course syllabus explaining policies regarding examinations, rewrites, extensions, refunds, appeals, etc. If you do not receive any communication within 2 weeks following the course registration, please contact Continuing Dental Education at dentce@ualberta.ca.  

Requirements

  • Participants must be either a certified RDH or RDA and hold a valid practice permit. 
  • Candidates, if you are an RDH ONLY must also hold a current and valid CPR certificate -healthcare provider (valid on the date of course). 

Previous orthodontic experience is not required and candidates do not have to be currently employed. 

Policies

Situation Policy
Withdrawal before course materials have been accessed Refunds will be subject to a 20% (of course cost).
Withdrawal after course materials have been distributed Refunds are not available unless the withdrawal is due to a medical condition.
Changing exam dates Candidated may apply for a 3-month extension to their theory exam by emailing dentce@ualberta.ca - extension requests must be recieved 2 weeks before the scheduled exam date. Note, there is a maximum of 2 extensions per particpant - each subject to a $100 extension fee.
Missed exams

Refunds are not available for missed exams. Missing an exam results in a fail - the exam can be challenged again after paying the $100 supplemental exam fee.

Rewriting the exam If a participant fails to meet the passing grade or misses the exam they can retake the exam by paying the $100 supplemental exam fee; however, particpants are limited to 1 rewrite that must be completed withing 3-months of the first attempt.
Failing the second exam attempt If a participant fails to meet the passing grade or misses the rewrite they must retake the theory course after a 6-month waiting period.
