Course Overview

Participants must be on the General Register with the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists with Advanced Restricted Authorization for delivery of Local Anaesthesia. Participants must have completed a council approved Local Anaesthesia for Registered Dental Hygienists course 

The Local Anesthetic Coaching Program is focused on refreshing all skills related to delivering local anesthetics.  Participants will benefit from having one year of access to all the foundational information related to local anesthetics through an online course.

During the full-day session at the KAYE Edmonton Clinic, there will be a lecture-style review of pharmacology, an interactive refresh of medical emergencies, as well as a thorough refresh of all of the following injections: SI, IO, PSA, GP, NP, IA/L, MI, LB.  In the afternoon clinical component, each participant will have the opportunity to focus on at least three injections they would like coaching on.  As well, each participant will learn and administer the AMSA injection.

Course Goals

Designed for certified dental hygienists with advanced restricted authorization, this course focuses on refining the safe and effective administration of local anesthetic injections. Primary objectives include:

  1. Master Core Fundamentals: Deepen your understanding of essential pharmacology and the management of anesthesia-related medical emergencies.

  2. Elevate Clinical Skills: Sharpen your hands-on proficiency through a blend of expert demonstrations and intensive supervised practice.

  3. Perfect Your Technique: Build precision and confidence across a full range of nerve block procedures.

  4. Prioritize Clinical Excellence: Master the nuances of patient safety, ergonomic positioning, and proactive troubleshooting for seamless administration.

Course Schedule

Online Learning Modules

  • Self-paced modules available for one year from the date of course enrollment.

  • Covers pharmacology, neurophysiology, anatomy, injection techniques, safety protocols related to local anesthesia.

Clinical Day Schedule

Location: KAYE Edmonton Clinic, University of Alberta 

Practical sessions are partner-based, meaning participants will both administer and receive injections. Pregnancy is a contraindication to receiving injections for the course. 

  • 7:45 a.m. - Check-in
  • 8 a.m. – Core concepts and technique review, worksheet review, knowledge assessment, and AMSA concepts and techniques
  • 11:30 a.m. – Lunch
  • 12 p.m. – Clinic orientation and instructor demonstration of all injections
  • 1:15 p.m. – Hands-on injections with two different partners
  • 4:45 p.m. – Debrief and Q & A

Course Materials

Online materials are available through eClass for one year starting from your date of enrollment. Registration confirmation will include your account creation and login details.

Requirements

  • You must hold a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) designation with an active practicing license and current local anesthetic authorization from your dental hygiene regulatory authority.
  • If you are practicing out-of-province, a Letter of Good Standing from your current dental regulatory authority (Please confirm with your regulatory body whether LA administration is within your scope of practice).
  • Practice permit and current CPR certificate documents are required to be uploaded upon registration

Policies

  • Refunds after eClass access will not be facilitated except in extreme circumstances. Transfer to a future session may be facilitated under certain extenuating circumstances and with sufficient notice provided.
  • If you are taking this course while registered as a dental hygienist in a province other than Alberta, it is your (the participant's) responsibility to ensure that your regulatory body will accept course work completed through the University of Alberta. The University of Alberta takes no responsibility if you take a course through our institution, and your regulatory body refuses to certify you/allow you to practice this activity.
