The narrative begins in the late 1800s with an exploration of the situation in the homeland region of Ukraine (then Austro-Hungarian Empire), followed by an ocean voyage by ship and across Canada by train. After the journey itself had ended, we learn about how newcomers faced another set of challenges and found new ways to adapt; they had to file a homestead claim, build houses to live in, and establish a core community infrastructure. Large, high-resolution historical photographs and pioneer quotes bring the past to life and connect the reader with the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants.
Journey to Canada supplements school curriculum topics related to Pioneers, Immigration, and Ukrainians in Canada and abroad, and will be useful to anyone interested in these topics.
