About the CCA

The Dental Hygiene Clinical Competency Assessment program at the University of Alberta Oral Health Clinic is a comprehensive evaluation of pre-clinical and clinical procedures using Criteria for Evaluation rubrics to determine standard met or standard not met. This 1:1 instructor-student ratio program is designed to determine participant competence in dental hygiene practice and identify areas for additional training or assessment.

Upon completion of the program, participants are expected to have been able to demonstrate reflective, ethical professional practice, integrate collaboration and communication with clients, colleagues, and health care providers, show an evidence based approach to the dental hygiene process of care, and demonstrate proficiency within a clinical care context.

Results of the evaluations are sent to the ACDH for consideration of eligibility for registration for practice. Please note that completion of this program does not guarantee eligibility for Entry to Practice as determined by the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists.

Prerequisites

1) Participants must provide proof of graduation from a recognized Dental Hygiene Program (e.g. transcript, diploma, or degree certificate)

2) Current CPR certification at the BLS level (completed within the last 12 months).

3) The UofA Continuing Dental Education Clinical Competence Assessment is intended to help prospective qualified candidates with their clinical pathway to practice in Alberta.

As such the University of Alberta requires confirmation that participants have reached out to the ACDH, have submitted their application to register for review, and that they seek this assessment as part of their application process with regards to registration in the province of Alberta.

This confirmation of contact is required prior to Clinical Competence Assessment Program registration and will be verified by CDE communication with ACDH.

Course Details

Clinical Competence Assessment

Participants will spend the first portion of the program completing pre-clinical instrumentation assessment. This will be followed by clinical delivery of limited dental hygiene assessments in partners clinic format.  They will move on to an additional simulated instrumentation assessment, completion of a case study, radiographic interpretation, and demonstration of pre-clinical radiographic technique.

Following review of evaluations from Day 1 of the program, a summary of results will be sent to the participant and to the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists. This report may include a statement that the participant is eligible to return for additional assessment during a second day of the Clinical Competence Assessment, where they will provide dental hygiene therapy for a client. Alternatively, the statement may include recommendations for further clinical learning prior to provision of patient care.

Please note that clinical sessions are subject to a minimum enrollment requirement. If the minimum number of participants is not reached before the scheduled session, the total fee reverts to $1200.

Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:45 pm (1-hour lunch break)

Patient Care Clinical Assessment

The final day of the program will consist of providing dental hygiene therapy for a client under the supervision of an instructor. This assessment will be scheduled 4-6 weeks following the initial assessment.

Schedule:  8:00 am to 4:00 pm (half-hour lunch break).
