This is a two day camp for students grade 4 to 6 where they will get a chance to learn mathematical ideas from and beyond the Alberta k-12 curriculum. The goal of this day camp is to improve understanding of mathematics among young students and foster their interests in this field. Participants of this camp will learn all about what math can offer and how solving problems can be fun, relevant, and overall rewarding. Each day, participants will have the opportunity to engage in two hands-on activities in topics beyond the Alberta K-12 math curriculum led by university students studying mathematics-related fields. Additionally, students get to tour the UofA and can connect with their peers through math games. Participants will need to be able to conduct themselves appropriately in a volunteer-led classroom environment. We ask that they engage with the other participants, session leaders, and volunteers in a respectful manner.
This mathematics day-camp is being organized by University of Alberta Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter at the University of Alberta (AWMSC).The purpose of our association is to create a community in which women and gender minorities can thrive in their mathematical endeavours, and to promote equitable opportunity and treatment of women and others of marginalized genders and gender identities across the mathematical sciences. Additionally, we expand our reach by promoting math to young minds, welcoming students of all genders to explore and enjoy mathematics.
