COURSE DESCRIPTION

Atraumatic restorative therapy (ART) is a procedure that utilizes adhesive restorative
materials to provide interim restoration of decayed teeth. Hand instruments are often
used to remove carious tooth tissue. No local anaesthesia or electrical instruments
are required. ART delivers a provisional procedure for populations that do not have
immediate access to full dental care.
THEORY MODULES
Atraumatic restorative therapy (ART) is a procedure that utilizes adhesive restorative
materials to provide interim restoration of decayed teeth. Hand instruments are often
used to remove carious tooth tissue. No local anaesthesia or electrical instruments
are required. ART delivers a provisional procedure for populations that do not have
immediate access to full dental care. Dental hygienists placing temporary restorations
must ensure that the client is aware of the temporary nature of the restorations and
must advise clients to obtain further dental care from a dentist.The theory modules will be accessible to registrants through the University of Alberta's external eClass portal. After registering, information on how to set up an eClass account will be sent. The ART course is designed to familiarize registered dental hygienists with the ART method of caries management through a series of modules and lectures that focus on, but are not limited to:

- Procedures
- Referrals
- Complications
The course is comprised of a two days of lab training on the clinical procedures that you will perform in the simulation portion of this program. The online theory modules offer study guides, learning activities, and quizzes that must be completed sequentially to help participants throughout the course.
PREREQUISITES
Participants must have:
- A current and valid RDH/RN Practice Permit,
- Current and valid CPR Certification,
- For out of province participants only, a Letter of Good Standing from your Association.
- It is strongly recommended that participants have been practicing in their field for a minimum of 6 months before taking this course.

- REGISTRATION CONFIRMS YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE COURSE. No refunds are permitted after course material access unless the withdrawal is due to medical conditions (must be requested in writing accompanied by a letter from the participant’s physician.)
- If a refund is requested before course material access, it is subject to a cancellation fee, which is 20% of the course cost. To withdraw or cancel your registration for a refund, please send an email.
